Copy, paste and DOS (both ways)

July 8, 2012

Did you know you can send the output of a DOS command to the Widows clipboard? Apparently you have been able to do this since Vista (an O.S. I largely managed to avoid) and is therefore also available in Server 2008 and Windows 7.

Simply type your command followed by “| clip”, for example..

dir | clip

Once on the clipboard you can paste the text into the Windows application of your choice…

And now for the other way.

If you have some text you want to take from Windows you can paste it into DOS by right clicking the prompt and then “paste”. You can speed this up by enabling “Quick Edit Mode” which pastes in the text as soon as you right click in the DOS window.

To enable “Quick Edit Mode” right click on the blue bar in the DOS window and select “Properties”.

Now tick the box “Quick Edit Mode”.

It’s a shame everything is moving to PowerShell really….
